travel asia japan nikko toshugo jinja
Guide books call Nikko 'the most extravagant display of religious architecture in all Japan'.
Toshogu Jinja is the final resting place of Leyasu Tokugawa, the first Tokgawa shogun.
It's construction was undertaken in 1636 by his grandson Lemitsu and took over 15,000 workers over 20 years to build.
The beauty of this shrine is not only in it's architecture and art, but in it's seamless integration into what is now a mature forest.
I really enjoyed the scale and majesty of this temple.
